Triple sheeting vs doona covers
If you manage a hotel, motel or resort, it’s most likely you’re already using the triple sheeting method to make your beds, but for those of you who are using doona covers or bedspreads, let’s take a look at these different techniques.
What is triple sheeting?
In most homes you’ll find standard doona covers, that is a doona (or quilt) with a doona cover fitted over the top. Triple sheeting eliminates the need for a doona cover or bedspread. It is more common in the accommodation industry and is a way of making beds using 3 sheets, and a blanket, doona or quilt for a warmth layer.
Find out how to triple sheet.
Why use triple sheeting instead of a doona cover?
Triple sheeting is already very common, but why is it better than using a doona cover?
It’s more hygienic
Have you ever climbed into a hotel bed and wondered if the doona cover or bedspread was clean? You’re not alone.
When guests arrive in their room, they want to know that their bed is clean and hygienic. In some cases bedspreads and doona covers don’t get changed between guests, because let’s face it, it’s a lot of work. Triple sheeting ensures your guests are getting into a clean, crisp bed every time.
It streamlines housekeeping
The triple sheeting method maximises housekeeping efficiency and creates a streamline process for changing rooms. Triple sheeting is easier to maintain and simplifies the bed stripping process for your staff by eliminating the timely process of removing doona covers and bedspreads.
It makes laundering a breeze
Forget about washing heavy doona covers or bedspreads. By using the triple sheeting method all you need to wash is the sheets. Blankets and quilts require less frequent washing as they are encapsulated within the clean sheets.

Commercial v retail linen - there's a difference!
Did you know there is a difference between commercial and retail linen?
It’s a common misconception that there isn’t much difference between retail and commercial linen, however, take a closer look and you’ll soon see there are some major disparities. Commercial bed linen is designed specifically for the hospitality industry and is very different from your standard, run of the mill retail bed linen.
What’s the difference?
Commercial sheets will not feel the same as retail sheets. You’ll see right away that commercial linen is crisper, heavier and thicker. This is because the thread/weave is thicker, allowing it to withstand heavier usage and washing.
The major difference between retail and commercial linen is that commercial linen is made specifically for durability. Commercial linen must withstand frequent use and regular washing and needs to endure years of use.
The fabric
In terms of the actual fabric, commercial hotel linen is normally a mix of 50% polyester and 50% cotton, with a ‘percale’ finish. The polyester increases the fabric’s durability and allows it to withstand multiple washes every week, while the cotton gives a softer, smoother finish.
Aren’t cotton sheets better?
Sheets containing a higher cotton content will not stand up to the kind of use associated with hotel and holiday accommodation, and they will fall apart, warp or shrink with such frequent laundering. They also need to be commercially laundered and pressed as cotton creases easily. Adding polyester to the mix reduces the need to for pressing if laundered correctly – click here for more information on how to care for your linen and towelling.
How important is thread count?
Contrary to what some people believe, the higher the thread count does not equate to better quality. By twisting together multiple threads, the thread count can be manipulated and increased without improving the actual quality. Similarly, you can have a lower thread count, but thicker threads, improving the quality of the sheets, yet sustaining a lower thread count. It doesn’t necessarily mean the linen will be more luxurious.
The fibre, size and how it is finished all contribute to the quality of the sheet. Check out our blog post for more information on thread count here.
What should you look for in commercial bed linen?
There’s more to hotel bed linen than thread count, you should look at the weight of the sheets. The weight of a good commercial sheet should be between 160 – 180 grams per square meter or gsm. This will ensure it handles frequent washing and maintains its shape wash after wash.
All the commercial bed linen we stock at National Hotel Supplies is designed especially for the hospitality industry, ensuring it is durable and endures years of washing. A high turnover hotel can expect their linen to last at least 4-5 years before starting to see any wear and tear.
If you have any more questions about commercial bed linen email info@nationalhotelsupplies.com.au, we’d love to help!

Styling with this year’s ‘Pantone Colour of the Year’
Every year the talented team of colour specialists at PANTONE release their ‘Colour of the Year’, and this year they’ve chosen the vibrant and bright ‘Living Coral’.
PANTONE describe Living Coral as ‘an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”.
Living Coral is eye-catching and refreshing and has us dreaming of the vivid colours of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s safe to say, we’re a fan!
How did PANTONE choose this colour? The PANTONE Color Institute has positioned itself as an ‘authority on colour’, and every year they take on a global search through all aspects of life to name their ‘Colour of the Year’. They say it is “a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture and serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude”.
*What PANTONE have to say about Living Coral? *Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, says that “Colour is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral. With consumers having human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial PANTONE Living Coral hit a responsive chord”.
How do you incorporate Living Coral into your property’s décor? Inject the bright and powerful energy of Living Coral into your space with a lampshade or cushions scattered across your daybed. Incorporate it into your kitchen in the guise of a decorative vase or some flowers, and match it with a fabulous piece of artwork on the wall.
Bring Living Coral into your living areas with candles, or even pot plants. Living Coral looks beautiful against crisp white hotel sheets, or in artwork hung on a freshly painted white wall.
What colours complement Living Coral? As per normal, PANTONE have released a spectacular series of colour palettes as inspiration, so you can put together the ideal combination of hues.
This year our favourite palettes are ‘Focal Point’, ‘Under the Sea’ and ‘Sympatico’.
‘Focal Point’ is a modest and cool palette that allows Living Coral to really pop and be the hero beside all the other shades. Our Grapefruit artwork or our soft Herringbone Throw draped across your couch or bed work great beside Living Coral, ensuring the colour of the year is a standout.
The colours in the ‘Under the Sea’ palette draw inspiration from our underwater ecosystems. If you’re working with this collection of hues our bright and vibrant Wahi Spa or Pure Beach range of guest amenities are a perfect choice, as is our Rainbow Bay and Crimson Plume Dusk artwork.
Our third choice of palettes is ‘Sympatico’, described by PANTONE as “a beautiful array of colours that humanize; fusing together a panoply of international skin tones”. This palette is soft and warm, blending sweetly with Living Coral. If you’re adding Living Coral to your bathroom our Natural Earth range of boutique amenities is a great match, and the Currumbin artwork, or Super Luxe Blanket show off the colours of Sympatico and will work great in your living room or bedroom.
If you’re adding a pop of Living Coral to the bathroom the Pacifics Pina Colada collection also works a treat beside this bright, vibrant colour.
We’re so excited to see how Living Coral will be used in interior design throughout the year, if you decide to incorporate it into your property don’t forget to send us a photo!
How to survive Christmas – our hints and tips!
Get ready, the silly season is here!
There’s no denying it, this time of year can be so much fun, Christmas parties, presents, food, wine and catching up with family and friends, but it can also be super stressful when you manage your own business.
If you have a hotel/motel/resort or holiday home there’s a lot to think about, extra bookings, ensuring you have enough guest amenities and hotel supplies for the Christmas period, looking after your guests, not to mention looking after yourself and your own family! It’s all too easy to get swept up in the hoopla of Christmas, meeting everyone’s expectations and ticking everything off your (what seems endless) to-do-list.
This year we’ve decided to go stress-free and share our hints and tips on the best ways to look after yourself and your guests this Christmas.
Don’t be afraid to make shortcuts
We know that your homemade Christmas pudding tastes better, but unless you’re Martha Stewart there’s no shame in buying a ready-made pudding or pavlova! Let’s face it, by the time the pudding comes out everyone is so stuffed with food they probably won’t even notice that it’s store bought!
This year simplify your Christmas menu and opt for cold meats and salads, heck, if you’re really short of time pick up a ready-made salad from your local supermarket, they are just as good!
Buy as you go
Every time you visit the shopping centre pick up a present or some food. Avoid the stress of last minute shopping and chip a little off your Christmas to-do-list every week. When it comes to Christmas you’ll be all ready to go!
Wrap your presents as you buy them
Picture this. Kicking back with a beverage of your choice on Christmas Eve! Forget spending the night madly wrapping presents, wrap your presents as you buy them and enjoy some time to yourself on the night before Christmas. Eggnog anyone?
Keep a diary
Expecting a lot of visitors at your home these holidays? Lots of parties to attend? It can get so confusing if you have a lot of family and friends coming and going over the Christmas holidays, and very busy if your calendar is full of Christmas parties and functions. Get organised and pencil in the dates in your diary and you’ll never be double booked again!
Ask for help
One word. DELEGATE! Don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself, allocate jobs to your staff, family and friends and spread out the responsibilities so all the pressure isn’t on you!
Be prepared – put your orders in now
Don’t get caught out over the holidays and risk running out of guest amenities or hotel supplies. To ensure delivery before Christmas please place your orders BEFORE 14 December.
Look after yourself
The most important thing – look after yourself!
Look after yourself in the lead up to Christmas by ensuring you stay fit and get enough sleep. We know it’s sometimes easier said than done, but put aside some time for yourself each day to relax, unwind and calm your busy mind.
And just remember what the holidays are really about, spending time with your loved ones and enjoying the company of your family and friends.
Merry Christmas!
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR OPERATING HOURS

Keep cool this summer
The days are getting longer and hotter, which only means one thing, SUMMER IS COMING!
As the temperature rises nobody wants their guests sweating inside a hot stuffy house or room, that’s why it’s important to give them everything they need to beat the heat and stay cool during the warmer months.
Here are some easy tips to keep your property cool this summer:
Get your air-conditioner in good shape
Many of us take our air conditioning units for granted and forget they need tender loving care. The last thing you want is your air conditioning unit breaking down on a scorching 35 degree day, so it’s important to have your AC in tip-top shape for the warmer months.
Your air conditioner should be serviced regularly, whether you do it yourself, or you hire a professional.
What needs to be done? The unit needs to be cleaned thoroughly, including the louvers, air filters and coils. A professional will also check the thermostat, connections, the ducks and drains, and will give it a complete once-over. Please consult your air conditioner manual for full instructions if you DIY.
Check and clean your fans
If your property doesn’t have air conditioning, fans are the next best thing and will bet getting a good workout during the summer months. The blades can get dusty, so give them a good clean, test every speed on the dial, and get rid of any unusual (or irritating) noises before your guests arrive.
Dust off the umbrellas
It’s time to bring out the umbrellas! Whether it’s beside the pool or in the backyard, umbrellas will be a welcome addition to the outdoors over the hot summer months. Unfortunately umbrellas can get dusty and grimy while they’re packed away during winter, so give them a good clean and make sure they are still in good condition and working order.
Pack away the winter woollies
Pack away the winter woollies and pull out your summer bed linen! Those heavy blankets and quilts won’t bee needed as the temperatures rise, instead, throw one of our 100% cotton waffle blankets over the bed for that added bit of comfort this summer! They are just PERFECT for warmer months, breathable and tailor made for the Australian climate.
Restock your pool towels
Do you have a pool? Is your property by the beach? When was the last time you checked the condition of your pool towels? Maybe it’s time for a refresh!
Bath towels aren’t made for the pool or the beach, but our 100% cotton pinstripe towels look good and are highly absorbent and durable. Just perfect!
Stock up on ice – CHEERS!
There’s nothing better than an icy cold drink on a summer’s day, so be prepared and have your freezer stocked up with ice, and some refreshing cold water in the fridge for your guests.
Don’t forget the fur babies
If your property is pet-friendly don’t forget to look after the fur babies. Water bowls scattered around the property, and even a small paddling pool will keep them cool on those super hot days.
Now for a special treat…
If you want to go above and beyond these summer holidays there are so many things you can do for your guests.
How about a fresh local fruit hamper in the fridge, cold mineral water ready for them when they arrive, or some icy poles in the freezer if your property is family friendly.
Here at National Hotel Supplies we love our coffee, so we love the idea of having all the ingredients on-hand for your guests to make their own icy cold plunger coffee! It’s easy to do, all you need is a plunger and a few simple ingredients including sachets of our yummy Café de Sol, Robert Timms, or One Fairtrade plunger coffee!
Oh, and don’t forget. For the entire month of November freight is only $10 for orders over $150. Get your Christmas orders in now!
If you need any help preparing your property for summer call us on 1300 557 415 or email info@nationalhotelsupplies.com.au
The Christmas Countdown
The countdown is on and Christmas is fast approaching, so now’s the time to get your property ready for the holidays. Here at National Hotel Supplies we’ve been busy stocking up on all your favourite products so you can prepare for the silly season and avoid the Christmas rush, but stocking up on your hotel supplies and guest amenities is just one part of pre-Christmas preparation. There are a few other things you can do to get your property ready for the holidays.
Fun for the kids
There’s a big chance you’ll have families staying at your property this summer so it’s important to cater to the needs of those little people! You want every member of the family to have a great time while staying at your property, and there’s plenty of ways to inject fun into your accommodation!
A few pool toys and inflatables will go a long way to please the kids, big and small, and board games and cards are always great fun for those long summer nights! Books are also great for those moments the kids want a little downtime. Oh, and of course, make sure you have wifi and the password is available for your guests!
Stock up in the kitchen
There’s nothing worse than turning up to a property and not even having the facilities to make a cup of tea or coffee. We have an extensive range of hot beverages, including our Fairtrade tea and coffee, as well as Café De Sol hot chocolate and Porter’s Premium teas.
But tea and coffee isn’t the only thing you can stock up on in the kitchen. Cereals, biscuits, jams and condiments are a little luxury for your guests without costing a fortune. They’ll love it, believe us!
Beach and pool ready
How often have you gone away without packing your beach towel? They are so bulky to pack, so it’s nice to have beach and pool towels available for your guests, to take down to the beach, or just for the pool if you have one.
Extra special guest amenities
We all love spending time in the sun over the Christmas holidays, but swimming in the pool or at the beach can really take it out of your skin.
We have a huge range of beautiful guest amenities that include some gorgeous skincare products that your guests will love. Try Pacifics Pina Colada Body Balm, enriched with pure coconut extract for hydration, or the Therapy Range Body Lotion, with 100% pure and natural essential oils of Juniper Berry and White Thyme, just stunning!
If you’re looking for Fairtrade products our eco.logic* range has a gorgeous Fairtrade Grapeseed and Green Tea Body Balm that will have your guest’s skin glowing by the time they go home.
Insect protection
If you have a few pesky bugs that visit on dark, we stock Vamoose, insect repellent towelettes, which are super handy to keep the mosquitoes away so your guests can enjoy the outdoors at all times of the day.
Local attractions
It doesn’t take long to put together a local directory, but it’s something your guests will definitely utilise. Everyone loves to explore the local area when they go on holidays, and a local directory makes it easy to find things to do.
List all your favourite local restaurants, local attractions, family friendly activities and local markets and have it on-hand for your guests when they arrive.
There are so many ways you can go above and beyond to get your property ready for Christmas holiday guests, even special touches like a Christmas tree, a fruit cake or a bottle of bubbles on arrival will impress the socks off your guests and keep them coming back year after year.
Don’t forget to get your orders in before the Christmas rush, call us on 1300 557 415 or email info@nationalhotelsupplies.com.au
What’s on trend in social media?
Gone are the days when it was questionable whether or not to use social media for business. It’s now an essential part of most marketing strategies, and even the smallest companies use social media platforms to connect with their customers.
Unfortunately, if you’re new to the fast-paced world of social media, or you’re not tech savvy, it can be quite overwhelming. With trends coming and going, it seems as soon as you get familiar with one trend, another one comes along to supersede it.
But don’t be discouraged. Here are a few trends that we think will be sticking around as we approach 2019.
Video content
Video content is still very popular across the majority of social media channels and we think this trend will continue into 2019.
The power of video is undeniable, especially on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Users are consuming more video content than ever before, it’s accessible, versatile and it’s so easy for your customers to engage with this kind of content.
Paid advertising
We believe paid advertising will still be popular moving forward into 2019. Due to past algorithm changes, it’s much harder to be seen in your customers’ news feeds. Paid advertising makes you visible to a wider audience and lets you market your product or service to a specific demographic.
Whether your budget is big or small, paid advertising on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook is a good way to promote your business.
Messenger apps
Once again, you need to be in the same place as your customers, and lately that’s on messenger apps such as Messenger or Whatsapp. You need to be using whatever channels your customers are using, and utilise these platforms to connect and reach out to your audience.
Chatbots
Chatbots have been around for years and years, but businesses are now using them in very different ways than ever before. Chatbots are being integrated with social media, targeting key phrases or words and responding with questions and comments to promote your business and generate sales.
Influencer marketing
Using ‘influencers’ to promote a product or service isn’t anything new, however, this marketing strategy has evolved.
In the past we’ve seen companies approach big name celebrities to endorse their but now many businesses are working with ‘micro-influencers’.
Micro-influencers are non-celebrities who still have a good following on social media channels, for example 1000 to 100,000 followers. Micro-influencers are more cost effective than ‘macro-influencers’ and are much more accessible to small businesses.
User-generated content
Using user-generated content is a great way to leverage content that has already been created. Businesses can encourage their customers to hashtag and share images with their product, or using their service, and these images can be shared through the business account. It’s an easy way to get content without the hard work of creating it yourself!
Ephemeral content
Ephemeral content is content that is only made available for 24 hours or less. Think Snapchat, or Instagram and Facebook stories. This year we’ve seen Instagram stories take off, and we think this trend will continue into 2019.
Why is it popular? Ephemeral content generates a call to action, and conjures up fears of missing out as the content is only available for a limited time, so users need to see it before it disappears.
Live streaming
Just like video, live streaming has been on trend in 2018. Live streaming is a great way to involve your customers and make your social media account more personal. It’s an easy way to give your customers a behind the scenes look at your business, or get them excited about something in real time.
